Project Multigenre Research Project: Outsiders
What it is:
This multigenre research project is based on Romano’s (1995) work. It involves researching a specific person, novel, or concept and then writing multiple artifacts to fully describe the research.
What to do for our MGRP:
Step 1:
Read The Outsiders and pick a social justice within the novel to research.
Step 2:
Share a social justice talk via FlipGrid. Here you will share a brief summary of the social justice issues in The Outsiders you will pursue for research.
Step 3:
Conduct additional research on the social justice topics addressed in the novel. In your research, be sure to note access dates and times, as well as web addresses because you will need them for MLA references. Also, please make sure you are only using credible sites (e.g., no Wikipedia).
Step 4:
Compose a minimum of 4 writing artifacts connected to your novel. See the list below for ideas. These are divided into categories, and you should choose at least one from each category. Additionally, choose artifacts carefully so that you can show all sides of this novel – from the characters and basic plot to the real-life social justice issues it addresses.
Step 5:
Write a bibliography in MLA format. You should have a minimum of four research sources, not including the novel.
Step 6:
Write a Dear Reader letter to include at the beginning of your project. This will include the basic, important facts about your novel (plot and characters), as well as insight into why you chose to write the artifacts you did and what you want the reader to know about your chosen subject.
For the basic facts, I recommend a four-sentence summary that follows this model:
Sentences 1-2: summary of the plot and characters
Sentence 3: analysis of some aspect of the novel (e.g., writing style, character development, literary conventions)
Sentence 4: statement of the social justice issue and its importance.
Step 7:
Write a self-reflection letter. Your letter should consider what you found challenging, surprising, and possible in taking up this type of work. Your self-reflection letter should address the following prompts:

- What surprised you about this project?
- What prior knowledge did you have about your social justice topic going into the project? What new information did you learn?
- On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being “not good at all” and 5 being “I am a rockstar,” what score would you give your project? Explain your choice.
What to include in your MGRP:

- A Dear Reader Letter
- A minimum of 4 artifacts
- A Bibliography in MLA format
- A Self-reflection letter, answering the questions mentioned in Step 7.
Extra reminders:
- Double-spaced, MLA format, 12 pt.
